No one really likes to clean, so it makes sense that you would want a bathroom that’s easy to maintain on a daily basis. If you’re looking to renovate or add a bathroom, you may want to keep its “cleanability” factor in mind. If you hate to dust in crevices and can’t stand cleaning grout, check out these easier-to-clean bathrooms. Your Boston bathroom contractor can help you with this as well.
Tile
Let’s go from the ground up. When it comes to the tile you choose, stick with larger format tiles (i.e., 12 x 12, and 12 x 24 sizes or larger) and stay away from the smaller ones. This will cut down on the amount of grout joints you have to contend with. It’s also a good idea to go with porcelain tiles that can be added closer together to minimize wider grout joints.
When it comes to grout, there are many different types to choose from. You’ll want to make sure that your contractor uses high-quality grout with built-in sealers that are mildew- and dirt-resistant. Older grouts and less expensive grouts require regular sealing. Higher quality grouts don’t need consistent sealing.
Cabinetry
Next up is cabinetry. Stay away from elaborate, overly-busy door styles with a lot of nooks and crannies that will collect dust. The last thing you want to do is have to use a cotton swab to get into all those little spaces. If you’re looking for easy maintenance, go with a flat slab door with streamlined hardware that’s easy to wipe down.
Countertops
Natural stone will be harder to care for than a quartz countertop, which is manmade. Quartz products usually come with lifetime warranties. They’re easy to clean, and look just like natural stone. Place the sink under the counter, not on top, so you don’t create extra crevices. This way you can just wipe crumbs and liquid spills right into the sink.
Shower Door
Choose a frameless shower door with a minimal amount of metal, which can collect a lot of dirt and make it harder to clean. This will give you more glass surface, which is much easier to wipe down.
Walls
When painting the walls, eggshell is recommended, as it’s a washable flat paint. It doesn’t have a glossy sheen like semi-gloss or high gloss paint, but you can still just wipe it down when needed.
Ventilation
Mold is enemy #1 in any bathroom, so be sure to add a ventilation fan to prevent its growth. An inline fan is best, to keep noise inside the bathroom to a minimum. As an added bonus, add a window or skylight that opens.
So, to wrap up, there are many ways to design a bathroom that’s easy to clean. Just follow these tips and ask for more suggestions from your Boston bathroom remodeler.
