Dens were a staple of homes in the 70s, a sort of non-work, cozy space where the family gathered to watch television or play board games. These small, closed-off rooms fell out of fashion with the open concept trend of the 90s and beyond. However, due to the den’s multipurpose, informal nature, these retro spaces are starting to make a big comeback in modern homes.
The trend is moving away from great rooms and large family rooms, throwing it back to a simpler time when family rooms were smaller and more compartmentalized. With the advent of video games, big screen TVs and social media, somewhere along the line, the den morphed into more of a media room concept.
More and more families are choosing to take a nostalgic stroll down memory lane by reintroducing the concept of the den to their new builds and renovations in Boston and beyond. The pandemic, and the lock down that ensued, can be credited to the return of the den as more families craved a comforting space where they could engage in family time activities, from watching TV to doing puzzles, points out Apartment Therapy.
Here are some classic elements of the family den to consider when creating one.
Classic Elements of a Den
- Leather: Leather is a traditional material that adds a masculine and classic touch to a room, especially if it’s tufted or studded. Add a leather sofa or armchair to complete the classic den look.
- Stuffed and cozy: If you want to steer clear of leather, cover your furniture in casual slipcovers. Your furniture won’t look as overstuffed in the small room, allowing for a sense of intimacy and coziness.
- Wood paneling: Warm wood walls hark back to typical 70s décor. To prevent your den from becoming dark and moody with dull monochromatic walls, add pizzazz with plenty of complementary accessories.
- Sofa and chairs: Stay away from sectionals if you’re trying to avoid arranging the room with a focus on TV viewing. If you’re going for more of a conversation vibe, mix up some chairs and sofas in different styles and position them in a circular fashion. Chairs with ottomans encourage reading and reflecting.
- Fireplace: What den would be complete without a fireplace in the corner? Whether you use gas, wood, or electric, having a fireplace in your den makes any cozy room even cozier.
- Small rooms: If you have an older home with many small rooms (i.e., tiny dining room or unoccupied bedroom on the first floor), choose one to convert into a den. That’s the hallmark of a great den: its compact nature.
- Bookshelves: If you have a larger room you wish to convert into a cozy den, break it up into two zones: one for book shelves, board game table, and reading nook, and another for a couch, TV, and video games.
- Office den: If your home office needs a makeover, create a den-like feel by incorporating dark walls and layered rugs for a cozy space to work each day.
