6 Tips For Remodeling Your Guest Room

Whether you regularly welcome guests to your home to stay for the weekend or your in-laws come for the occasional visit from out of state, having a guest bedroom can prove very valuable and convenient.

If your current guest room leaves a lot to be desired, you may consider remodeling it to better accommodate the needs of your friends and family. Here are some ideas on how to create the ideal retreat for visitors.

1.  Update Basics Like Paint and Flooring

If your floors need updating, start with those. Hardwood and carpet are the most popular choices. New flooring can provide an instant update to the space. Next, take a look at the paint color and condition. You may want to put a fresh coat of paint on the wall to update the style and cover scuff marks.

Don’t forget about the ceiling. It may also need a refresh. When considering colors for your flooring and walls, stick with neutral, soothing tones in calming browns, tans, blues and greens.

2.  Install New Lighting

New lighting can make the guest room more relaxing and tranquil. After all, your guests will be sleeping and resting here. Create just the right ambiance with soft lighting to help them unwind after a long day.

You may want to add a dimmer switch for overhead lighting, along with plenty of lamps for task lighting. Don’t forget to plug in a nightlight so they can get to the bathroom at night.

3.  Provide Storage Space

If your guests are staying at your home for a prolonged period of time, they will need storage for their stuff. Make sure there is a dresser or closet where they can store their clothes and belongings so they feel like a part of the family and not just a temporary guest.

Provide hangers, drawer dividers and closet organizers, as well as an iron and ironing board in the closet.

4.  Update the Guest Bathroom

If you have a bathroom attached to the guest bedroom, now’s a great time to update it. Upgrade the vanity countertops, bath/shower combo, flooring and fixtures to make them feel as comfortable as possible. If you don’t already have a powder room for guest use, consider adding a full or half bath off the guest room if space allows.

5.  Go With Light, Soothing Colors

Light colors and calming tones make a great complement to the larger surfaces and items in the guest room, particularly when you only have a small space. Light colors will make the room look a lot bigger than it really is. On the other hand, dark colors tend to enclose the space.

6.  Don’t Forget the Finishing Touches

Think about the little details or cozy touches that make your guests feel at home. Put some thought into the artwork, bedding, rugs, and pillows. You may also want to add a TV, bookcase with popular reads, and a coffee maker.
